We talk a lot about business and technology and all of that good stuff here on the TS Tech blog, but believe it or not, there are (at least) a couple things in life that are more important that that. One of the big ones is personal health. This goes double for all you hard workers out there who put in long stressful hours trying to run and manage your business - it's easy to forget or skip over the routines for proper health maintenance. Unfortunately, we don't offer a flat-rate remote monitoring and maintenance service for humans, but here are a few tips you can do to keep yourself in tip-top shape while on the job.

ts tech mini logoWhen Disaster Strikes - The Big Bad Wolf
by Chris Geiser, PCS Technology

It may be superstition, but many of us still believe that catastrophes come in 3s. In the case of a catastrophic loss of business facility (i.e. hurricane, earthquake, waterlogging of fire hoses), many businesses get to experience all three of these catastrophes within the span of a few short days (or even hours).

Firstly, one must endure the physical and emotional trauma of experiencing the actual disaster. Secondly, one must pick through the pieces and assess how bad things really are. Thirdly, and the most delicate, will be communicating with employees and customers, having to tell them what’s happened, how bad it is, and what uncertainties the future holds.

A Backup System Alone is Not a Disaster Recovery Plan
Most small business managers rise to their positions because they have the vision and drive to succeed. For them, planning for a disaster can feel like planning to fail. They don’t like to think about what a disaster would do to their business continuity, so they don’t. Of course, they approve the expense of a company backup system. However, when disaster strikes, that so-called “backup” system takes on the role of “recovery” system. Suddenly, its performance limitations have severe consequence.

The Three Little Pigs
Okay, so we know that small business managers hate to envision their company going through a disaster, but we have important simulations to run here. So to lessen the trauma, and in sticking with the theme of 3s, we’re employing the help of the Three Little Pigs.

windows november_2011_newsletterMicrosoft held their first ever Build Conference in Anaheim in September. It’s a new annual event for Windows developers to gather and learn about building applications for the Windows platform. This one was special not only because it was the first, but also because leading up to it, all the buzz was about how much of Windows 8 Microsoft would show and what details we would learn about the next version of the most popular operating system in the world.

Microsoft did not disappoint. They have showed demos, talked about features and functions, and even made an open beta immediately available to all who are interested to download, play with, and Microsoft hopes develop applications for. The buzz leading up to the conference has grown into a fever pitch with partners, developers, and customers all extremely excited about the next Windows release. What is it about this platform that Microsoft is doing right, and why is everyone so excited?

First off, Windows has a new look and feel. The next interface, dubbed “Metro” represents the single biggest change to the Windows interface since the additions of the Start button back in 1995. It has been completely revamped from the ground up. It is a radical departure. The traditional desktop and icons have been replaced by dynamic tiles. These tiles will not only allow you to interact with program, but will allow the applications to communicate with the user by surfacing key messages, data, or photos, depending on the needs.

Making Your Business BYOD Compliant

We talk a lot about smartphones and tablets as business tools, but these days more and more people are using high-end devices personally. It's likely that they are bringing these devices in to work, and often using them to become more productive at their job. We call this Bring-Your-Own-Device, or BYOD, and it isn't a bad thing. The catch is managing security risks when users are using their own personal gadgets.

Is it Time to Retire your Old Technology?

A lot of Wyomissing small businesses are taking advantage of regular proactive maintenance that keeps their servers and workstations in tip-top shape much longer than their typical lifespan. Amazing amounts of money are saved on new hardware and downtime and everything is just peachy! You've been able to run that old server for years and you have workstations that are still chugging away on Windows XP. What you don't know is that your old technology, even if it is in perfect working order, could be drastically slowing things down for your business.

Foursquare is a social network of sorts that works like a marketing game. Users run Foursquare on their mobile phones. It uses GPS to pinpoint your location and pulls up stores, restaurants, and other public locations and venues in your vicinity. You can then 'check in' to the place you are at, and it will share it with your friends. It's a service that promotes word-of-mouth marketing!

Todd Schorle presents at Quosal Nation

Todd presents three tips on how to improve your technology proposals at the First Quosal Nation Event during the IT Nation 2011 pre-event program

First: Sign up for and use online credit card processing with order porter.  It is extremely easy to setup, people love to shop and pay online, people want to earn Amex points and it simplifies your collections process.

Second: Have your Quotes & Order Porter tie into your website.  Link the quote back with different pages on your website to provide supplemental information.  We do this with or satisfaction guarantee and information about our services.

Third: Review Large project quotes in person.  Quosal is a great tool for organizing your proposal, but there is no substitution for face time with your prospective client.  By sitting down in person and reviewing a proposal you are able to address any concerns and questions that might arise from the content of the proposal.
