What should I do with all my passwords? by Todd R. Schorle |
Passwords are the key to modern security. Even the most impenetrable firewall and the best lock on your door can be meaningless if you or your users have easy to crack passwords. The problem all started about 50 years ago with the advent of the computer age. As technology progressed, the number of passwords we have to remember has skyrocketed creating a unique challenge for people: Do I write down my passwords and risk losing the paper, or do I create an easy to use password that I can remember?
Either option is not really great. Simple passwords are easier to crack than most people think, and the security of writing down passwords really depends on where you keep the written information. If you store your written password list in a safe, well you are probably. . . .”safe”. If you are like most people and post-it note them to the monitor, under the keyboard or in your wallet/purse, watch out! Cleaning people, coworkers, office visitors and service people all may see your password list, and worse yet, information stored in your wallet/purse could very easily fall into the wrong hands if lost!

If you're like most small to midsize businesses today, you can recall a time when you had to rummage through thousands of files -- just to get your hands on the one you needed.
